Whalers reviewing the situation in the arctic and deciding to leave the hunt early. The  crew of the Greely where not so lucky. There decision to stay came to a disastrous end.

These whaling vessels decided on leaving early.   that wasn't the case for the crew of the Greely Expedition.

1880 winter came early that year for the "Greely Expedition" in the Arctic

bone chilling cold and stuck in the arctic ice.  the men where just stuck there. they would pile ice on the north side of the ship to keep the ship insulated and the wind out. without adequate clothing or food to eat other than rock moss and leather sledding equipment. The men resembled skeletons.
